Task 19-05-2022:
1. Who the participants in the event are;
Answer:
The participants in the event are : Marlie, Max, Claria, Morgan, Dela, Cam, Zandra, Syelen, and NBC's Stephanie as host. Also, there were four presenters consisting of two men and two women who appeared in the first few seconds to inform the title and the last few seconds by briefly telling the lives of the four presenters teenagers, continued by making conclusions and suggestions to close the event. Then, when the discussion with the teenagers went on, they were led by a woman who acted as a host to set the direction of the topic of conversation and ask questions for the teenagers to respond to.
2. What topic they discuss;
Answer:
From my point of view, they discussed the topic of drugs and sexting, which are common in their neighbourhood, Colorado. Then, they discussed some issues in more depth as follows:
1) Sex and hooking up. The phenomenon of a woman will receive a negative stigma if she does sexually provocative things.
2) Sexting. Tells about how was the first time and how come they 'stumbled' over somebody's naked picture through internet.
3) Drug. They talked about prescription drugs. Stated that drug like marijuana is legal for adult, it's such a normalised drug.
4) Social media. Tells the competition throwing the best party and who the most at the party, then post it on Instagram to see how people react to his performance.
5) Pressure. Teenagers' anxieties against excessive parental demands, such as teenagers having to take many classes and extracurriculars, waste their time hanging out with their friends.
6) Lying to parents. Several teenagers described various effective strategies they had used to deceive their parents. One example of this strategy is to pretend to be someone else when texting their parents.
3. Express your opinion about:
a. The participant's dress code;
Answer:
When I saw their dress code, I think it's semi casual style. Judged by the phrases "off-limits here's," "unfiltered conversation," and "speak openly." These three phrases mean the discussion is carried out in a relaxed and comfortable manner. So, it doesn't make the teenagers feel burdened when the event runs. As we can see, they wear comfortable but appropriate clothes, like tee shirts, jeans, dress, wearing sneakers, and even blazer. Also, looked like they dress thing up a bit with a stylist top, jewelry, wearing heels, and boots.That was a nice, fit, and smart choice for this kind of occasion!
3. b. Their personal relationship
Answer:
In the discussion, the personal relationship between them is normal, they discuss a problem, respecting the opinion of every member who is in the forum. The teens didn't know each other because they were gathered from various high schools in Colorado, but the way they acted and talked to each other seemed like they enjoy each other companies. They also accept each other's opinions. and it's a good communication and culture to imitate from a discussion point of view.
3. c. level of formality of event;
Answer:
Level of formality of event, the event is not formal, that is, there are no rules such as the use of appropriate clothing, or guest arrangement arrangements. Looked like the event is packaged in a relaxed manner. I can see this in the intonation of speech, the choice of diction, and the body gestures of all the people caught in the discussion. They talk with more pleasant facial expressions because the topics discussed are not too heavy and involve teenagers. So, the viewers who watch on average are teenagers and parents. The inclusion of jokes made the event more colourful, and it was easy to understand what the people in the show were saying.
3. d. Level of participant’s involvement or participation in the discussion,
Answer:
The level/scale of the participation are 100 %. Neither of them are shy or anxious. All participants Marlie, Max, Claria, Morgan, Dela, Cam, Zandra, Syelen, and NBC's Stephanie participated actively in the discussion and enjoyed it. They told their experiences well and did not feel pressured because they had been briefed to speak openly when the discussion started.
3. e. Roles of the moderators;
Answer:
I feel that the moderator has carried out his role well because she directs the discussion according to the sequence of topics that have been determined. As the discussion progressed, she showed a severe face which meant she knew that the subject of discussion was not about the problems that teenagers often experience. However, she inserts a few jokes so that the atmosphere of the conversation becomes fluid and the participants can refresh their minds when answering the next question. The moderator doesn't intimidate the teens, so they feel comfortable telling their life stories. The moderator reads the questions in a clear voice and at a moderate tempo so that the participants understand the questions without needing to repeat them. In addition, the moderator focused on listening to participants' opinions and stories and did not interrupt the participants' conversations so that participants felt valued for what they said.
3. f. Other aspects that you see important to address
Answer:
I think the important information to address are How about they represent themselves. So you can see through the whole videos. That they represent how vulnerable a teenagers can be that lived in modern era. You must feel yourself,know about yourself meanwhile you must have social interaction. And also there are two essential things in a smooth discussion: the selection of the venue and the direction of the participants' seats. The room used in the event was appropriate because it featured many artistic paintings and colourful carpets. This affects the participant's perspective when expressing his opinion. Something beautiful in nature improves human mood, and the brain works better than in a dark room. The direction of the participants' seats in the event is the sofa arranged face to face with the true purpose of understanding better the expressions and ways of speaking of other participants.
4. Are the factors listed in point 3 similar or different from your own academic or cultural context? Elaborate your response and provide examples when necessary!
Answer:
In my opinion, the factors listed in point 3 that's level of formality of the event are the same as the academic and cultural context in Indonesia. Where when a variety show brings a topic, the hosting theme will be appropriate as in the video where when the topic is about teenagers, the program that is made seems relaxed and not too formal so that during the event it will be smooth and comfortable between the host and the resource person. And it also refers to some factors. Whenever I attend campus activities that are held informally/casual, and I wear a shirt, basic pants, and sneakers. In conclusion the factors listed in the point three are not so different from cultural context. I can say it like the way we interact in social media, lying to parents, our relation to others, or even sexting, they are not so different and it is kind of normal to happen.
5. a. Level of directness of utterances;
Answer:
Direct language is generally simpler to
produce and as a result requires less
control of language. To produce an
indirect utterance may involve:
1. The action is mentioned either implicitly or explicitly.
2. The negative evaluation of the action is expressed by the speaker either implicitly or explicitly.
3. The agentive involvement of the addressee is either implicitly or explicitly expressed.
4. The negative evaluation of the action and of the addressee himself is either implicitly or explicitly expressed.
Based on the four criteria and the considerations concerning the requests we established eight levels of directness, level 1 being the most indirect and level 8 the most direct type of complaint. The levels and their definition are listed below.
So, In my opinion, in this video the level of directness of utterancea is around level 4. Those children were not telling the names of friends they are talking about and most of the things or product names (such like cough syrup). But in some occasion like when the participants immediately spoke the name of the person in question, such as "Grandma" and "Sam," casually and quite transparent without hiding their identity. Participants did not beat around the bush in answering questions from the moderator. They told their experiences and ended with solutions to be used as lessons for the future.
5. b. Level of politeness of utterances;
Answer:
There are 10 levels of politeness. Level 1 - 4 is too direct and may sound rude for the interlocutors. Level 5 - 6 would be fine. And level 7 - 10 as the most formal ones, it's way too formal for people who already know each other.
In this video, I think the levels of politeness of utterances they show is around level 5 to 6, they talked about some sensitive topics but the atmosphere seemed good, it's not too direct and sound fine, there is no offense either they were capable to continue their chat. Even though they never knew each other before, they immediately became close when they got together to discuss the given topic.
5. c. Look at English language expressions that the participants use;
Answer:
Patterns of Information sequence the participants utter (Because-Therefore or Therefore-Because)
Answer:
1. (Therefore-because) : Sometimes they accidentally use pills at parties, because they don't know what they're taking
2. (Therefore-because) : They sometimes lie and do fun things outside of school, because their parents only tell them to study.
3. (Because-therefore) : Their parents want to know everything about their children, so they lie to them.
In Conclusion, "Therefore-Because" information sequence patterns are used more when telling stories, including participants in this event. The participant said first what the problem was, then accompanied by the reasons behind it so that this pattern was easier to understand by the audience of the event.
5. d. Other than you think important to address
Answer:
Another interesting thing from the conversation in my opinion is the use of cellphones. where when Alex talked about his cellphone problem, he reminded him that the importance of cellphones as a means of communication with our parents while at school, such as using GPS to find out where we are. but in today's era along with the proliferation of mobile phone technology is often misused by students. as good students we should be able to understand better how the cellphone should be used, and what is the purpose of our parents giving it to us.
6. Your General Personal Comments. Feel free to express yourself
Answer:
